Our two-part series “Babylon Prague” celebrated its premiere at the invitation of the F.A.Z. (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) and ARTE shortly before the start of the Frankfurt Book Fair, with the Czech Republic as this year’s guest of honor.
“Babylon Prague” interweaves documentary and fictional elements, spanning the period from the founding of the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 to the invasion of the Second Czechoslovak Republic by the Nazi-controlled German Reich in 1939. For the first time, this film by the Czech-German writing duo Matthias Schmidt and Vít Polácek offers a shared, European perspective on this extraordinary interlude, during which Czech, German, and Jewish artists played a very special role.
“Babylon Prague,” premiering on TV on October 8 on ARTE (8:15 p.m., “The Roaring Twenties”; 9:00 p.m., “A Storm Is Brewing”) and on arte.tv.
