Jonas Kaufmann is an ardent film fan. Now he is showing this passion on stage for the first time. In his new programme ‘The Sound of Movies’, Kaufmann presents film music hits from 80 years of film history.
Beginning in the Germany of the Weimar Republic (ICH KÜSSE IHRE HAND, MADAME), the programme moves on to film music by Nino Rota (WHAT IS A YOUTH?), Leonard Bernstein (WEST SIDE STORY) and John Williams (SUPERMAN) through to scores from the new millennium, such as Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack to GLADIATOR from the year 2000, including classics such as SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD.
In addition to the music, the concert location is also opulently staged: the Smetana Hall in Prague. Adorned with figurative ceiling paintings and stucco decorations, the Art Nouveau glass dome in particular exudes the flair of the era in which cinema was invented and pictures learned to move.
Recorded on 23 February 2024 in the Smetana Hall in Prague.
