‘I really fell in love with the trumpet. Just like you fall in love with a person: you just like everything about them. And I like everything about the trumpet’. Lucienne Renaudin Vary is a passionate ambassador for her instrument. She started trumpet lessons at the age of eight, played her first international competitions at the age of eleven and began her studies at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 15, where she first studied classical trumpet and later jazz trumpet. She has since played her way to the top of the trumpet scene and performs internationally in both classical and jazz music.
She is always curious about new repertoire and the further development of her instrument. In the film ‘Lucienne Renaudin Vary and the trumpet’, we see her together with her Swiss trumpet maker Fabian Bächi, who adds a fourth valve to her instrument to extend the range of the low notes: ‘She always wanted to play the bass trumpet, but the instrument was a little too big for her,’ says Bächi, fulfilling a long-held dream of Lucienne’s with his experiment.
The musical centrepiece of the concert portrait ‘Lucienne Renaudin Vary and the trumpet’ is a concert at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in the main church of St. Michaelis in Hamburg, where Lucienne Renaudin Vary impressively presents the possibilities of her instrument. With two concertos by Vivaldi and Marcello, she demonstrates her brilliance, virtuosity and strength in the baroque repertoire. The repertoire is complemented by three pieces by Astor Piazzolla, in which her incomparable tonal charm comes into its own.
