In the heart of Berlin stands one of Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s most beautiful buildings. Inside, visitors find a one-of-a-kind neoclassical concert hall – which, however, is a reconstruction. Its doors first opened to the public in 1984. Schinkel recomposed.
But how did a neoclassical concert hall in the Prussian tradition come to be built under real socialism? How did Schinkel’s famous playhouse, where, until 1945, Gustaf Gründgens made theatrical history, become a concert hall? And: is the Konzerthaus possibly even the better Schinkel?
