Josef Kaiser (1910–1991) was one of the most influential architects of the GDR. Between 1950 and 1984, he played a leading role in numerous, mainly representative government buildings. His modern designs along Berlin’s Karl-Marx-Allee garnered international attention and were regarded as an expression of the GDR’s cultural identity. Many of his buildings, including the iconic Kino International, are now designated historic landmarks.
